Areessa’s Painting

In my research I found numerous answers to my question, and I wanted my results from my research to be incorporated into my art. In my art piece, there are two sides. The left side represents Indigenous people, culture, and society, while the right side represents those of non-Indigenous people.
My painting is called “Connections in Canvas”. I wanted my painting to be very symbolic, so I thought about what all the elements could represent. On the Indigenous side, everything is being casted as a shadow – a silhouette. This represents how Indigenous culture and history is being shadowed and not learned/understood about as much as it should be. I wanted to highlight key parts of the Indigenous culture, so I added a bison and crops, symbolizing how Indigenous communities embrace nature through intergenerational wisdom and diverse cultural perspectives. On the right side of the painting symbolizes westernized society, including tall buildings and not much natural land embracing. The tall buildings represent colonization as it represents dominance of the settlers.
